• Small incision
Cosmetically pleasing incision, typically 5.5 - 9 cms in length for hip
replacement, 7.5 - 10 cms for hip resurfacing.

• Minimal blood loss
Current experience is that 90% of the patients do not require transfusion.

• Reduced surgical trauma
Results in quicker mobilisation post surgery leading to early discharge from hospital. Most patients discharged day 2/3 as compared to an average in-patient stay of 7 - 10 days. (These results are not currently evaluated formally as facilities at hospitals are not available for early discharge.)

• Less disruption to muscles around the hip joint

Leads to better overall function result allowing patients to return to normal activities. (no formal evaluation at present)

• Surgical Training
Surgeons can easily be trained in the procedure which does not depend on intra-operative X-ray imaging.

• Immense financial benefits and cost saving
Reduction in transfusions, and early discharge programmes result in cost savings averaging 50% of in-patient bed stay.

• Advantages to National Health Service

As patients discharged at an earlier stage there is better utilisation of the severely constrained bed situation in the National Health Service.
